Obscure Brazilian artist ^L_ has made an intriguing entry with their latest release on the Italian post-industrial heavy electronics label, Brutal Forms. The EP, titled “Music for Doomers”, is a visceral, four-track exploration of a nihilistic generation’s mindset, one that often perceives life as a bleak downward spiral.
The journey begins with “BDSM”, a relentless gabber track that pounds with fetishistic intensity, perfectly suited for the main dancefloor of Berghain. The track’s unyielding pace grabs hold of the listener, offering a raw and immersive experience that’s impossible to ignore.
The intensity continues with “Sad People Hunting Happy People”, where drilling beats and razor-sharp metallic timbres are set against dark, reverberating ambient textures. This track paints a scene of revenge, a sonic critique of toxic positivity that unfolds in a soundscape of apocalyptic desolation.
“Doomer Music” takes the listener into a futuristic realm, driven by cutting-edge synth work, biting acid 303 lines, and hard techno beats. It creates a dystopian cyberpunk world that mirrors the inner turmoil of any doomer’s mind, perfectly encapsulating the EP’s overarching theme.
The EP concludes with “Satan + Jesus + Judas”, a track that delves into religious themes with provocative flair. ^L_ masterfully merges seemingly opposing concepts in an intricate percussive piece that traverses drill and bass, jittery IDM breakbeats, and industrial tones. The result is a sonic journey that challenges conventions, guiding the listener through a landscape where sacred and profane, chaos and order, collide.
“Music for Doomers” is a powerful, unsettling work that leaves a lasting impression. It’s an explosion of sound and concept that reflects a dark, disillusioned worldview, making it a significant addition to Brutal Forms’ catalog and a bold step forward in ^L_’s artistic trajectory.
