In July, ALRT and Sam Silver introduced their Leap 96 project with the release of ‘Back It Up,’ a track that immediately set the bar high and hinted at the exciting potential of this collaboration. Now, just a month later, the duo returns with their follow-up single, ‘Again,’ featuring the talents of Whiterosemoxie and Yona. This release serves as the second installment from their upcoming self-titled ‘Leap 96’ EP, which is slated for release on October 18th under the LA-based label TH3RD BRAIN Records.
‘Again’ is driven by a high-energy liquid drum and bass production that highlights the complementary talents of Yona and Whiterosemoxie. Their contrasting voices, one male and one female, create a unique tension and energy, reflecting the complexities of relationships. The emotionally charged lyrics are paired with ethereal melodies, building up to an electrifying DnB drop that propels the listener into a contemporary soundscape that defies traditional genre boundaries.
Yona, the 18-year-old French-American singer-songwriter, brings her distinctive blend of pop infused with grunge, grime, and guitars to the track. Her intensely emotional and unique voice adds a layer of depth to the production, creating a perfect harmony with the track’s overall vibe.
American rapper Whiterosemoxie, who has a deep personal connection to the song, shared, “When we recorded ‘Again’, I had just recently gone through a breakup, and constantly saw it rubbed in my face on social media. At the top of the year, I had found new love and wrote this song to express my cautionary attitude towards my new relationship. We were at the point where we could decide to be more than friends or hit the brakes. Knowing we both want more out of life than what we have now, it is very hard to imagine a successful relationship that also allows for us to achieve what we want. When we do this thing we both know we shouldn’t do, will you blame it all on me?”
Leap 96 is a collaborative endeavor between Sam Silver and ALRT, inspired by the late ’90s and early 2000s when Garage and Drum and Bass began to emerge in the rave scene. Their music fuses vocal-driven dance beats suited for both upbeat and mellow moments. The name Leap 96 was chosen to symbolize the year between Sam and ALRT‘s birthdays, which also happens to be a leap year.
The project’s sound direction reflects the duo’s backgrounds, with ALRT hailing from the old-school rave scene and Sam bringing influences from modern garage, rap, and ethereal house. This blend results in a unique sound that merges elements of garage, rap, DnB, and vocals with an indie pop twist.
The partnership between Sam Silver and ALRT began in a Hollywood, California studio, where ALRT co-founded with the well-known artist/producer JOYRYDE. What started as a casual co-writing session quickly evolved into two months of intensive co-production, resulting in the four tracks on the upcoming EP, along with numerous other works in progress.Make sure to check out the single and keep an eye out for the full ‘Leap 96’ EP, dropping on October 18th!
